Coming up at INKubator PRESS

Alternate Approaches to Relief Printing

Diffuse Relief Printing Demonstration with Monika Meler
Where: INKubator PRESS
When: June 28th 5:30-6:30pm

Free and open to the public.

This demonstration will focus on Alternative Approaches to Relief Printmaking, using uneven pressure to produce beautiful, spontaneous, and multi-layered prints. A process called “diffused relief” will be the core of this demonstration. This process, using matrices carved out of mat board produces soft, diffused images that are very different from the graphic marks that relief printmaking is known for. Participants will discover a range of possibilities while learning how to approach relief printmaking from a fresh, new perspective to compose layered, rich prints.

Monika’s show “Contain/Retain” opens on July 2nd at the Cocoon Gallery at the Arts Incubator. Immediately following her demo at the printshop, get a sneak peak of her show which will feature new works created using the techniques she is demonstrating for us.

Monika Meler has participated in various national and international exhibitions, including the Lessedra World Print Annual in Bulgaria and Sixty Square Inches, an international printmaking exhibition. Her work is in numerous collections, including the Academy of Fine Art in Poznan, Poland and the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. Recently, she completed an artist residency with the Cork Printmakers in Ireland, where she also taught a relief printmaking workshop. Visit Monika’s website here.

@ the de-Boss Project Space

“For the rest of my life”Works by Nicholas Naughton including woodcuts and mixed media prints from his Los Trabajadores series.

Naughton’s show, in the newly christened de-Boss Project Space, addresses his experiences living near agricultural fields in New Mexico. The title refers back to a conversation he had while walking in the rows of a lettuce field with a group of migrant workers. In Southern New Mexico, it is a common site to view workers hand-tending to crops. In his work Naughton comments on the experience of workers through life sized woodcut prints, digital images, and carved wood panels. His prints are confrontational while simultaneously quiet. They harken back to familiar modernist depictions of field workers, yet today they call to mind, amongst other things, the political quagmire of immigration in the U.S. today.

Nicholas Naughton recently was brought in as the new director at INKubator PRESS. He taught printmaking, drawing and artist books at New Mexico State University until only last year before traveling the United States and through India during the fall of 2009. In January of 2010 he attended the Vermont Studio Center before working with a non-profit art center in Northeast Iowa and now works at INK PRESS. This is his first show in Kansas City, MO.

“For the rest of my life” will run through the month of July.

INKubator PRESS is located at 115 West 18th Street, Kansas City, MO 64108. We are a part of the Arts Incubator. Cocoon Gallery is next door.
