Gretchen Blackman
Artist Statement
Presently, my focus is on the series of planets and other objects in the universe which began with a study of the earth’s moon. I examine infrared, x-ray, or natural light images of each orb and when possible, view with a telescope before painting.
Relaying to the viewer the age, damage and resilience of these bodies is accomplished by building layers of marble dust, polymer fluid and paint. The vivid colors and lush textures make the paint come alive. As I paint I am influenced by dreams, memories, and myths both collective and personal and strive to give the viewer a feeling of everyday reality simultaneously infused with a daydream of what might be.
